  • Full Support: I consider myself low-income/low-wealth. I cannot access this course without financial help.
  • Partial Support: I consider myself low-middle income/wealth. Paying full price for this course presents somewhat of a financial hardship.
  • Full Price: I consider myself middle income/wealth. I can afford to pay full price.  This may be a sacrifice, but I can find the resources to do so.  This is the full cost of running a Hammerstone course including paying our teachers a fair wage, covering insurance, maintaining our tools and facilities, managing administration, and supporting our family.
  • Partial Contributor: I consider myself upper-middle income/wealth. I would like to make a donation on top of the full price of the course in order to help subsidize access for those who cannot pay the full tuition.
  • Full Contributor: I have the resources to make a substantial donation to ensure that these classes remain accessible to people of all income/wealth levels

Payment Options: Pay the full amount now, or hold your spot with a deposit (remainder of payment due 2 weeks before class begins)

Sliding Scale Payment: Because COVID-19 has continued to impact our nation, especially the most vulnerable among us, we are continuing our sliding scale policy for our classes in 2021.  Materials costs are not included in the sliding scale.  Please choose a tuition amount between $200 and $480 (or more) that you can afford to attend this class. Choose one of the 5 sliding scale amounts, or use the “Pay By Check” payment method at checkout and include a custom tuition amount in the notes field at checkout.  Please pay what you can (read our guidance on how to choose a payment here).  Your support allows us to continue offering the sliding scale benefits to those with financial challenges!

You will need to bring:  Personal hand tools from this tool list. Please bring the tools on this list that you are able to purchase, already own, or can borrow.  Contact us to let us know which Hammerstone tools you will need to use during class.

Who is this class for: This table saw fundamentals course is open to women of any skill level.

Pre-requisites: None

Overview: One of the most powerful and versatile tools in the woodworking shop is the table saw.  It is also one of the most dangerous.  At Hammerstone, we believe that dangerous tools should be respected, but not feared nor avoided.  This one day skills intensive will familiarize students with the safe use of the table saw through both demonstration and ample hands on experience.

Instructors: Maria Klemperer-Johnson

Topics Covered:

  • Table saw safety
  • Changing blades
  • Different types of saws
  • Ripping on the table saw
  • Cross cutting on the table saw
  • Cutting angles

Project Description: The main goal of this class is to provide students with as much hands on experience with the saw.  We will make practice cuts on scrap wood and construct a small crate. We will hone our skills by processing materials for our 2-day basic skills courses later in the summer.

Take Home: Small crate
