  • Full Support: I consider myself low-income/low-wealth. I cannot access this course without financial help.
  • Partial Support: I consider myself low-middle income/wealth. Paying full price for this course presents somewhat of a financial hardship.
  • Full Price: I consider myself middle income/wealth. I can afford to pay full price.  This may be a sacrifice, but I can find the resources to do so.  This is the full cost of running a Hammerstone course including paying our teachers a fair wage, covering insurance, maintaining our tools and facilities, managing administration, and supporting our family.
  • Partial Contributor: I consider myself upper-middle income/wealth. I would like to make a donation on top of the full price of the course in order to help subsidize access for those who cannot pay the full tuition.

Description

Sliding Scale Payment: Because COVID-19 has continued to impact our nation, especially the most vulnerable among us, we are continuing our sliding scale policy for our classes in 2021.  Materials costs are not included in the sliding scale.  Please choose a tuition amount between $200 and $480 (or more) that you can afford to attend this class. Choose one of the 5 sliding scale amounts, or use the “Pay By Check” payment method at checkout and include a custom tuition amount in the notes field at checkout.  Please pay what you can (read our guidance on how to choose a payment here).  Your support allows us to continue offering the sliding scale benefits to those with financial challenges!

You will need to bring: Personal hand tools from this tool list. Please bring the tools on this list that you are able to purchase, already own, or can borrow.  Contact us to let us know which Hammerstone tools you will need to use during class.

Who is this class for: This class is open to women of any skill level.

Pre-requisites: None

Course collaboration: This course is sponsored by the Ithaca Community Gardens, a not-for-profit membership organization devoted to furthering community food self-sufficiency.

Overview: In this 5-day class, students learn the fundamentals of stick framing.  Stick framing is the process by which most modern houses are constructed using small dimensional lumber (2×4’s or 2×6’s) on regular spacing with plywood sheathing giving rigidity.

While building the shed, students will learn and practice the techniques of cutting, assembling, and raising wall and roof systems of a small structure.  All these skills and techniques are scalable to larger structures.

Lead Instructor: Maria Klemperer-Johnson

Topics Covered:

  • Reading plans
  • Measuring and marking
  • Cross-cutting with circular saw
  • Layout
  • Wall and roof assembly and raising
  • Sheathing (cutting and applying)
  • Window openings
  • Theory of stick framing
  • Roofing

Project Description: Students will work as a team to frame a small garden shed. By the end of the week the goal is to have all four exterior walls and the roof framed and sheathed.

Take Home: This class has no take home portion.

Materials fee: none
